NOTE: Version Numbers containing a letter are BETATEST Versions!!!
Proper function is not guaranteed!
Version numbers containing α or ß are official released
TEST Versions! Please test it and report your experiences to
the author.
Why another watchdog?
WDDV was developed since you need such a kind of programm
when running a mailer or a BBS!
Now, there are a lot of watchdogs, but no one, who supports
DESQview in the way I wanted them to. This means: WDDV will
not run without DESQview!!!
Features of WDDV:
Hardware: ■ AT 80286 or above
Software: ■ DESQview 2.25 or above
■ A Mailer or BBS programm wich initializes the
modem regularely.
■ Fossil driver
Memory: 33k
have a look at sample WD-PIF!
WDDV was tested on following system configurations:
■ AT386 AWARD Bios, DESQview 2.26,2.25, QEMM 5.0,4.x
BNU184ß, X00122a, Frontdoor, RemoteACCESS
■ AT386SX PHOENIX Bios, DESQview 2.26, QEMM 5.0
BNU170, Frontdoor, RemoteACCESS
ATTENTION: this version (1.10α) will work properly with Frontdoor
systems and is supposed to work with BINKLEY!
I would like to (and HAVE TO) hear about other mailers!
The first nodes reporting will join the
BETATESTTEAM automatically and allways get the
newest versions!

USAGE: WDDV <COMPORT> <TIMEOUT> <B:?> <-L>
■ comport: 0,1...(0=COM1, 1=COM2 usw)
■ timeout: WDDV will reboot your machine after TIMEOUT
MINUTES, when there was no activity or
TIMEOUT counter will be reseted.
■ B:? : B:F perform system boot via fossil routines
B:D normal DOS reboot (would hang on most
machines!).
B:L "last chance" creates a processor shutdown
-> reset on AT class machines...
Please use the UPPER CASE letters!!!
I implemented different kinds of booting, because
DESQview/QEMM are known, that it might not be
possible to reboot the system. So I tried to
offer different ways. Find out the one which works
on your machine.
■ -L : WDDV will genarate a log file called WDDV.LOG in
the directory you can specify in DVMENU "change
a programm" directory. See WD-PIF.DVP!
The logfile contains date and time when WDDV was
fired up. So you can see, if WDDV had to boot
your machine. Default: No logfile.
WDDV is running in his own task! That brings some advantages:
When WDDV is active, it always watches the Computer-Modem
connection for activities.
So it probably will recognize system-crashes if not the whole
machine is locked! But in this case other software watchdogs
will also not be able to recover this.
To guarantee a properly function of WDDV you should initialize
the modem with an AT command (on my system I use ATZ). This
will be recognized by WDDV.
You can recognize that WDDV is working properly in the status
window:
┌───[ WDDV 1.0: COM2 ]───────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ DSR CTS -DR- COUNTER │
└────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
^
DR is the synonym for the DATA READY signal. This will
not be visible. When the software initializes the modem,
you can see, that the status window shortly displays DR.
At this point you know that COUNTER is reseted to your
TIMEOUT parameter.
The count-down of the TIMEOUT parameter of course will be stopped,
when WDDV detects a CARRIER. The input buffer will be flushed
by WDDV after loss of carrier.
Prior versions initialized the fossil, which caused problems with
Binkley systems.
WDDV does not use too much CPU time. On my 386/16mhz I get a norton
SI of 16.9 with one task. With WDDV running in a second task SI
decreases only to 15.0!
You can increase the performance of your system, when you run WDDV
"hidden". That gives an SI of 15.9 on my machine...
